The personification of the frogs makes you feel what the frogs are (probably) feeling in the setting of the piece. The way the picture's art manages to spread the feeling around matches the art style as well. You can see the intention in every stroke and shade of grey used, not to mention you use variation to your advantage, using it to shade while still looking unified at the same time. Not to mention that the frog on the snail has a great sense of gravity. The frog is just perched on the snail in a way it wouldn't fall off, rather than just being on top.
